What is the best backpacking tent that you can stand up in?
Backpacking tents are often extremely light. In order to accomplish this, manufacturers often minimize the features and design into the most compact form possible. Even though this is the general trend, there are still tents that are great for backpacking while offering enough space to stand up in.
Below is a list of the some of the top backpacking tents that you can stand up in while still maintaining a lightweight pack for those extra long hikes.
What is the Best Backpacking Tent You Can Stand Up In?
The average height in the United States is 5 foot 10 inches tall. With this in mind, our search is limited to tents that are close to this size at the center dome. While this may seem easy, due to the previously mentioned weight reductions for backpacking needs, most tents are scaled down into the most compact dimensions possible. Even so, we’ve found several backpacking tents you can stand up in, even though you might have to hunch over slightly.
Coleman 4-Person Instant Cabin
Coleman recently released the 4 person Instant Cabin and it’s right on the edge of being considered a backpacking tent. Weighing in at 9.8lbs., it’s still manageable for long distances while being able to stand up.
- Pre-Attached Poles
- 60 Second Set Up Time
- 5 Foot Center Dome Height
- One Person Set up
- Fits One Queen Sized Mattress
The Coleman 4 Person Instant Cabin was designed around one aspect, quick set up time. The support poles come constructed, so they only need to be unfolded to fully assemble. Pitching can be completed in 60 seconds by just one person. It’s incredibly simple.
While it’s not the largest 4 person tent available, its 8’x7’ interior is large enough to fit a queen size air mattress with room to spare. The 5 foot center dome is a nice added feature from traditional dome tents.
It comes with a carrying bag that easily fits everything you need. One problem with most tents is trying to get all the items back into the bag. The large carrying bag that comes included with the Coleman 4 Person Instant Cabin assures you fit everything easily since it’s nice and spacious.
The Coleman 4 Person Instant Cabin is one of the most affordable tents we’ve seen for what you get. It can be found for under $100 at Amazon.com.
Naturehike Ultralight Pyramid Tent
The Naturehike Pyramid tent measures in at just under 4.5ft at the dome but it retains the traditional backpacking tent criteria (lightweight and compact). It weighs in at 2.6 lbs, so it’s one of the lightest and tallest backpacking tents we’ve been able to find. You will definitely have to hunch over, but you will be able to stand up to change clothes or stretch.
Green Elephant Pop Up Utilitent
Typically designed for outhouse use, the utility tents have the ability to be customized into a nice backpacking tent. At close to 7ft tall, it easily accommodates just about anyone standing up, and at 5.5 lbs can be carried on long hikes with ease. It may take a creative mind to customize a large enough sleeping area, but it provides a good base to work off of for a backpacking tent that you can stand up in.
The market for backpacking tents that you can stand up in is small due to industry standards of weight reduction and compact sizes to reduce the burden on long hikes. Even so, options like the Coleman Instant Cabin and the Naturehike Pyramid Tent allow you to stand up, even if they do have downsides. If standing up is a large priority, you won’t find many tents over 5 ft tall that still have the weight reduction for long distance hikes. Custom tents may be another option for developing a tent you can stand up in until the tent industry jumps on board.
